The Banff Artist in Residence (BAiR) program offers visual artists the space and time to engage in intensive, self-directed research and studio practice in a supportive learning environment. Participants are provided with a studio, accessible 24 hours a day, as well as targeted access to our extensive facilities.

This program is for visual artists with an exhibition/publication record who have completed formal training in visual arts at the post-secondary level, or who have equivalent experience and recognition from their peers.


Banff International Curatorial Institute: Art, Writing, Practice
Deadline: February 7 | Program Dates: July 2–19, 2024

Co-led by faculty Tina Campt and Macarena Gómez-Barris with guest lecturers Saidiya Hartman and Jack Halberstam, Art, Writing, Practice is a residency and public symposia on art writing with a particular focus on experimental forms. A program of the Banff International Curatorial Institute, Art, Writing, Practice is open to writers, critics, scholars, curators, and creative writers interested in arts-based writing and seeking mentorship in this field.


Visual Arts Thematic Residency: Get LIT! Language, Image, Text
Deadline: February 21 | Program Dates: June 24–July 26, 2024

Led by faculty Joi Arcand, Whess Harman, August Klintberg, and Michael Turner, this five-week residency invites visual artists working in all mediums to explore language, image, words, and text through self-directed studio practice and research creation.


The application fee for each program is $65 ($35 for applicants who identify as Indigenous).
