The mission of the Roman J. Witt Residency Program is to support the production of new work at the University of Michigan. Open to both established and emerging artists and designers, the program awards one residency each academic year to support the development of a new work in collaboration with the Stamps School of Art & Design and the University of Michigan community. It includes a $20,000 honorarium, housing, studio space, and up to $5,000 in funding support for project materials.
The 2024–2025 Witt Residency is organized in partnership with the Stamps Gallery, a public center for contemporary art and design in downtown Ann Arbor, as part of the UM Stamps School of Art & Design. The gallery serves as an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. It also partners with faculty and students to develop and present exhibitions and programs that examine the potential role of art and design in creating a more just, equitable community.
The residency will encompass a making period of up to 12 weeks in residence, followed by an exhibition period. The culminating show will open early in the fall of 2025 and will occupy the Stamps Gallery, with the potential for additional programming to extend beyond the gallery space.
Machine Dazzle, a New York-based artist, designer, and multifaceted maker, is the current artist-in-residence for 2024.
Proposals for the 2024–2025 Witt Residency Program can be submitted through February 15, 2024. The Witt Residency Program’s application process is conducted using the online review system SlideRoom. A nominal $15 submission fee applies, which goes directly to SlideRoom for providing hosting services.
