Arts/Industry, one of the most remarkable collaborations between art and industry in the United States, is accepting applications through March 14. The residency will be awarded to 12 artists in 2023.
The Arts/Industry residency offers artists the time and space to focus on creating new work in studios located within the Pottery and Foundry at the Kohler Co. factory in Kohler, Wisconsin. It is open to emerging and established artists.
Artists need not be trained ceramicists or metalworkers, just interested in the materials and the potential for the industrial environment and processes to influence their creative practice. Hundreds of artists have benefited from the Arts/Industry residency since its genesis in 1974.
The residency emphasizes exploring new materials and processes in a hands-on way while building relationships with the skilled craftspeople who work for Kohler Co. Artists are exposed to a body of technical knowledge that enables and encourages experimentation.
Typically, four artists are in residence at a time. Participants spend three months working in either the Kohler Co. Pottery or Foundry to develop work in ceramic, cast iron, and brass. Artists-in-residence receive 24-hour access to studio space, industrial materials, use of equipment, technical assistance, photographic services, housing, round-trip transportation, and a modest weekly stipend.
