Material Transformations

Led by Candice Lin with Mel Y. Chen, Beatriz Cortez, and Kristine Thompson, this residency invites a collective investigation of the radical potential embedded in organic matter, and will think with the histories latent within natural materials used in artistic production. Open to visual artists working across mediums, the program will also look at the way in which plants have been used as modes of healing or resistance to dominant systems of power; examining links between plants, nature conservation, colonial bioprospecting, and discourses of hygiene and eugenics.
Who should apply?
Visual artists with an exhibition/publication record who have completed formal training in visual arts at the post-secondary level, or who have equivalent experience and recognition from their peers.
Ecologies of Precarious Abundance: Queer Life and Natures
Deadline: March 23, 2022 | Program Dates: August 2–September 2, 2022
As climate change, biodiversity loss, and widespread pollution drastically reconfigure the environments we live in, things are not only getting worse — they’re also getting weirder. Led by Heather Davis with Ama Josephine B. Johnstone and Tejal Shah, this residency will look to novel organisms, chemical contaminants, and strange bedfellows while also drawing inspiration from queer theory to reexamine ecological relations. Intended for visual artists who work at the intersection of queer life and ecology, the residency will provide a lens to re-think how we might wish to understand relations with each other and with the other-than-human world.
